Hi,

I'm an absolute newby with mapnik, but this is just about computing exponential costs.

Suppose you have japan in 1 tile, and you like to render 10 levels of zoom. And hen you zoom each tile it generates 4 tiles, so:

1 + 4 + 16 + 64 + 256 + 1024 + 4096 ....
4¹+ 4²+4³+4⁴ ....

so for level 10 you have to render 4¹⁰ tiles = 1048576

if one tile takes just one second to render you will need 1048576 seconds to render just level 10, this are 291 hours or 12 days.

This is just an example, i do not know exactly if when zooming one tile explode to four, but the computing cost is 100% exponential.

Salut!

Jaume.

We are currently rendering OSM using mapnik in Window platform with
reasonable spec of h/w (2.6G CPU and 3G RAM). We just want to know
usually how long does it takes to render OSM map. Currently we are
trying to render Japanese map but seems like it is running more than 1
weeks and still running. Your comments will be very helpful. Thanks in
advance!

how are you rendering? are you using mod_tile - if not it may take
forever (I remember trying to render just India on my VPS and it was
still running after 10 days)
