Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html
Further to Richard and Bob's comments, among others:
I first saw Caliper's products in action at the University of Calgary, where
I taught back in the mid-1990s. I'm not certain by any means, but I'd wager
that the U of C geography dept is one of very few that has Caliper, ESRI,
and MapInfo products running side-by-side. In teaching there, I was
impressed with how many of the students, having no preconceived notions as
to what was a "good" GIS, picked Caliper software as most useful hands-down.
It's quite likely that I would not be a Maptitude user if I hadn't had the
good fortune of happening to work in a place where Caliper was already known
and appreciated.
Perhaps Caliper would benefit from donating copies of Maptitude to more
educational institutions. I'm sure the "mind share" gained from such a
venture would more than pay off down the road, as this seems to be a part of
the strategy that's working for ESRI. I know that at the U of Saskatchewan,
where I went to grad school, Caliper has zero profile among the faculty and
students I know.
