This is because Tools-Locate by ZIP Code has 2 methods to choose from, and the user can choose one at a time:
- locate scattered by ZIP Code Area (using the area layer)
- locate centered by ZIP Code Point (using the point layer which has many more records)
The Map My Own Data Wizard uses an iterative method:
1/ First locate by ZIP Code Area
2/ Locate the records not found using the ZIP Code Point layer.
There are two kinds of ZIP Codes: those that can only be represented as points, and those that can also be represented as areas. There are several choices in the Locate by ZIP Code command: one locates records within an area ZIP Code, and the others locate records at or around the point ZIP Code. Depending on the choice you make, you can get different numbers of matches. If you use the area choice, then rerun on the ZIP Code Not Found selection with a point choice, you should get the same number matched as does the Wizard.
