TOP STORY -- The Federal Communications Commission today decided
to expedite the deadline for all 24- to 36-inch televisions to be installed
with digital tuners to March 1, 2006. The Consumer Electronics
Association (CEA) said the action will "help speed the consumer
migration to DTV and reduce marketplace problems with the 50 percent
requirement for sets in that range."

>From this week's BRIDGE, a special on data: "Conventional wisdom tells
us that basic cable's strongholds are generally located in the northeast
corridor and/or in conjunction with major urban areas. True or False?
>From the top five DMAs in terms of basic cable penetration, that notion
would have to be ... False. To be sure, two of the top fives do both fit
the conventional wisdom: The No. 42 DMA in size (Harrisburg-Lancaster-
Lebanon-York) covers metropolitan strongholds in Pennsylvania and the
No. 55 DMA (Albany-Schenectady-Troy) is mostly located in upper New
York, with minor incursions into Massachusetts and Vermont. But the
three other DMAs on the list, which boasts an average basic penetration
of 77 percent, are far off the beaten northeast/urban track." Want to
