TOP STORY -- The departure has been rumored for some time, but FCC
Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy said today she intends to leave the
Portals on Dec. 9. Abernathy, a Republican, spent four and a half years
at the FCC. The departure leaves the FCC with four commissioners, only
if and when Republican nominee Deborah Tate wins Senate
confirmation. At the moment, the FCC is split between two Republicans
(Abernathy and Chairman Kevin Martin) and two Democrats (Jonathan
Adelstein and Michael Copps). One seat is vacant.

>From this week's BRIDGE on piracy: "Over the past handful of years,
both DISH and DirecTV have had success in bringing signal pirates to
justice. So much so, in fact, that former FBI agent Jim Whalen,
DirecTV's VP of signal integrity, says his department hardly even looks
for signal pirates at the moment. 'Now that we have secure (smart)
cards, we've found the market has moved more toward different types
of fraud.'" What kind of fraud? Subscribe and read this week's edition of
The BRIDGE at http://www.mbc-thebridge.com to find out.
