Paris-based Alcatel SA declined to comment on reports that its board would meet to decide whether to push ahead with a merger. According to reports, Alcatel wants to sell its satellite business to French defense electronics company Thales SA prior to a deal with Lucent, but European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. also wants its Astrium satellite unit to be involved in any consolidation. Lucent also refused comment.
