Yes I completely agree that adoption of Oasis format is crucial. If Microsoft would faithfully translate the Oasis documents then that would help as well as LO converting Microsoft document 100%.
As far as being aware of OpenOffice, many here in the States are aware of it, most choose to buy Microsoft word because the functionality is more advanced. OpenOffice to many is simply unfinished or lacking in features. This and the fact that every major corporation uses MS Office exclusively, so therefore all the archived documents are in MS format.
