Good question and I'm not sure. I have asked Alexandra how she did last
year.

There are tasks to be done before the event and tasks during the event.

Registration and distribution of badges + infodesk is a must. Someone
paid should do the bulk of the work but then volunteers can be included
doing shifts in the infodesk. (although I dream of a 225 people event
where IRC or SMS plus the host reception is enough to handle the
non-peak hours)

The tasks during the event are mostly related to the rooms and sessions,
and this is where volunteers make a big difference: making sure
everything works, water in place, time kept, microphones...

Another possible area is extending what the core organization will
offer. For instance, maybe we can afford having good video recording and
streaming for the main room, but maybe volunteers want to make sure
specific sessions or rooms are additionally covered as well with
recording, no streaming.

A lot more can be done with each session e.g. taking notes (wik,
etherpad), plugging a Google+ hangout, connecting with IRC, tweeting...

Some help is also needed right before & right after the event with
signaling, etc. We will know better about this when the host defines the
work they will do. Overall technical support falls also inn this category.

I expect to have dedicated people for the critical areas: preparations
before the event, technical setup & support & catering.

Heh, I know some of those volunteers and actually someone had
recommended me Gil Forcada, who happens to live now in Berlin.
