Hi Mark, I think I shall actually order and read your book. The groups linked to the 1st International in the US are really interesting (and "quirky"). I once did some research on the socialists among the French emigrants to America in the second half of the 19th century. Only a minority of French activists fleeing Europe after 1848 and 1871 ended up in the States, and bizarrely, most of them seem to have been Blanquists. Which would indicate that the followers of Blanqui had established an informal network within the US at that period. Most of these immigrants opened small businesses and workshops, restaurants and groceries. Several French language Socialist newspapers were published in the US from 1850 to 1880. Some of them returned during the 1871 Commune, and were spared the firing squad thanks to their US citizenship. To my knowledge, no academic study has yet appeared on these groups, some of which would join the 1st international. As to the content of your book, I think I will first read the work in question and then make up my own mind. Reviews have an irritating way of shaping the way you read a text. Better to read the original argument first, then the rebuttal. BTW, who are the Spartikist League you mentioned in another post. The name would seem to imply that they are Luxemburgists (or just rebellious slaves ?), but your post also refers to their urging people to follow Bolshevist tactics... They have stolen untold millions that they never toiled to earn, But without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn, We can break their haughty power, gain our freedom when we lear, That the Union makes us strong Solidarity for ever ! ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
