Hi Louis and all,
I agree that socialist have to argue against many dominant political views
amongst all sorts of groups, but my point is that we should have a
realistic assessment of what those views are.
Secondly, I think socialist have to explain what they have in mind as their
practical alternative. Community policing by neighbors, for example, is not
a realistic alternative against well armed gangs. We need to offer a
practical reform and "defund the police" is a slogan but not a program.
We may believe that a socialist revolution will eliminate the police or
transform them radically, though that does not seem to have happened
anywhere. So we also have to explain our conception of how a socialist
revolution would transform the police, even if such a revolution is a
distant prospect.
