I have to say, I think the term Black Americans creates a monolith that
makes this thread seem like folks are missing the point. Even saying the
white working class is problematic from a number of angles, the least of
those, that it helps create an in and out group that can then feel
victimized.

And for folks who don't think NGO of any sort don't exert influence, some
folks in social movement studies rely on  resource mobilization theory that
covers all of this.

Funny, most of the proponents like John McCarthy liked to think getting the
bucks for NGO was great and what all movements must do to survive and
create change. He hated when I brought up research that showed the opposite
when I took his course on social movements in grad school;  research shows
that did indeed change the groups, big money wants something back. McCarthy
simply shrugged most of my arguments away as money for quan studies don't
flow for folks looking at Marxian politics quantitatively and I didn't have
the data (then) to support my claims.
