The gateway to Whitney's degeneration--or as I see it, his flowering--as a crypto-Nazi was his infatuation with Putin, which began long before CP even dreamed of getting rid of him. "Way to go, Vlad!" he exclaimed ecstatically in CP over some Putin wave of the hand that was supposed to have put the evil US Deep State in its place. It isn't surprising that he's transferred his man-crush to Trump. The Russians--who do IMO have some kind of hold on Trump, probably through his money-laundering business and/or debt obligations--may have failed to exert a decisive influence over the 2016 election, which the Democrats screwed up mostly on their own, but they have certainly done a number on American left journalism.
