Why burn books when capitalism has perfected mental viruses that can destroy intellect long before it becomes capable of learning anything? Why kill millions of the Other when you can just leave her to starve or die of untreated disease? European fascism took its classic form in Germany and Italy, nations that came late to statehood, had largely missed out on the imperialist bonanza of the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, and had not in modern times enjoyed the blessing of institutionalized chattel slavery. Spain and Portugal--with more Bonapartist forms of fascist dictatorship--had held and lost vast empires and Austria and Hungary were relict of a failed empire. I want to suggest that the US is different historically. What we get probably won't be fascism except in a moral sense.
