I think that the GOP is heading towards a split and may well soon become two separate parties with one party arising from the GOP's corporate wing and the other party from its white nationalist Trumpist wing. In fact, Trump has been reported as talking with his aids about this very scenario. If that happens then the Democrats may well be able to hold on to the White House for the foreseeable future, which would explain why the Jacobin/DSA would be nervous about someone like Howie Hawkins possibly playing a "spoiler" role in 2024 since a strong run by a Green or independent leftist candidate could upset the apple cart for the Democrats in 2024, especially if the economy should still be mired in an economic downturn.
Meanwhile, top Republicans like Mitch McConnell are trying to split the difference between the contending Republican factions - condemning Trump on the one hand while voting to acquit him on the other hand.
