I mean, that's not necessarily a criticism of Marx, nor of Engels, it's just 
they were different people. The clearest you get in Marx is the 1859 Preface 
(https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1859/critique-pol-economy/preface.htm),
 which is so clear and to the point that people are suspicious of it. And I'm 
not saying that Engels vulgarised Marx, but it's certainly easier to vulgarise 
Engels, and I think that a lot of what purports to be 'historical materialism', 
both on the part of adherents of Marxism and detractors, is vulgar. But I'm 
interested in the lineage of the terminology ....
