As a former Assad apologist ,I think I can explain where this lack of 
opposition to Syria comes from.

First, a sort of "knee jerk anti imperialism" ,a belief that any enemy of the 
US state, who professes a belief in anti imperialism, can't be all bad.
Second, a complete ignorance of the modern history of Syria, especially since 
the 1970s. Something the link you recently posted, Loius, cleared up for me. 
This is a history rarely discussed in leftist circles. This article doesn't 
nearly cover all the details, though.
