Two brief comments:
(1) A matter of terminology-categorisation-shrouding. The term 'Stalinist' is a
most convenient way of garbaging any critique that points to any distinction
between the state under JVS and that of Khrushchev, Brezhnev or Putin. What
both Louis and you mean (in my own view) when you discuss 'Stalinism' to the
current situation in Syria - is a misleading shorthand. One that ties Putin to
a former socialist state while instantly igniting the conditioned response that
'anything to do with Stalin' is repugnant. If people - rightly object to the
often loosely-tossed term 'fascist' - as a blanket derision for anything that
is not liked shorn of analysis - those same people might consider looking
closer at the toss-off label 'Stalinism'.
(2) Roger Kulp says: "This is a history rarely discussed in leftist circles.
This article doesn't nearly cover all the details, though." This is quite
correct. The article in question that was referred to by Louis, does not cover
details. Regrettably I have found details are precisely what the blinkered
Putin-ites manifestly do not care about. More to the point, it is difficult to
get leftists who are on the verge of being taken in by the noise created by the
Putin-ites, to wade through detailed footnoted texts. The Putin-ites have
successfully camouflaged what went on (& is going) in Syria. To serve the
purposes of showing the 'detail,' were prior articles that in reality go back
to the 1990s. But here they are referenced from only later iterations in the
more recent years around 2017 on. These include: The class character of
