As an airline captain and USAF Vietnam era veteran, I am amazed that any person
could view this outrage as being justified or legal on any basis. My only hope
is the ICAO and all the aviation authorities in all nations will demand the
release of this journalist now. The law of the seas is also applied to aviation
in many respects. Back in history such an act is an act of war. One only has to
remember the Trent Affair in the US Civil War when Wilkes of the USN stopped
the UK vessel Trent and removed two Confederate agents from that ship which was
going from Havana to the UK. The Brits were so outraged that they were
threatening war, and Lincoln realized that whey he released the agents. As he
said, one war at a time.
I hope that more robust means will be employed against Belarus if they do not
release this guy. Randy Erb
