The "anti-imperialist" left has been defending Lukashenko's hijacking
because Israel, the USA, France et al have done the same thing in the
past. I am reminded of how the same people defended Russian intervention
in the Ukraine after Euromaidan. They excused it because the USA had the
same kind of relationship to Batista's Cuba that Russia had to Ukraine.
When Castro overthrew Batista and Ukraine became independent, it was
logical that something like the Bay of Pigs and the secession of eastern
Ukraine would be justified in "national security" terms. Why would any
superpower permit a state hostile to its strategic goals get a foothold
so close to its borders? In other words, its the same argument you get
in seminars at Georgetown University or in a Thomas Friedman column.
