Penguin translations are the worst; their fiction translations are positively dreadful.
In this case, however, the damage is minimal — since it doesn't matter whether the commodity was conscience or virginity or potatoes, it also doesn't matter if the commodity is conscience or virginity or horse dung. I find it stranger to think of conscience or virginity as commodities, myself.
