In Canada (especially amongst the poorer) frozen 'horse apples' are used in
place of hockey pucks.  I know this from an interview I did with Hall of
Famer Willie O'Ree <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_O%27Ree>, first
black to play in the NHL (1958) with the Boston Bruins:

" *Horse Apples* – Frozen horse droppings, often used by young boys as Ice
*Hockey* pucks. Also called horse puckies."
