Maduro has definitely been moving to the right in the last few years, but even
so he is still further to the left of most so-called socialist leaders here in
the US. While international solidarity with countries in the crosshairs of US
imperialism is important, so is movement building at home. COINTEPRO cast a
long, dark shadow over the left in this country, one we have only begun to
emerge from in the last few years. One reason we have not seen new generations
of socialist/Marxist leaders (read future icons) in this country could be the
younger generations have learned the lessons of history too well, and don't
want to end up like the Panthers.

As for the DSA, and their trip to Venezuela, something I could never see a
centrist like AOC doing, perhaps there are those within the DSA who want to
both move the organization further left, and try to give it more international
credibility. If that's the case, maybe they ought to team up with certain
smaller socialist parties, who already do have international connections.
Parties who are busy reaching out the poor and working classes, doing mutual
ald, educating about capitalism and Marxism, but lack the name recognition, and
big money supporters (?) of the DSA. And I am aware there are branches of the
DSA doing this, but how many in the DSA couple this with a message that the
Democratic Party is neither a friend of the poor and working classes, nor a
vehicle for societal change. That in a capitalist country, you cannot vote your
way to revolution.

Antiwar groups, like Code Pink have taken a much stronger stand against
blockades and sanctions than the DSA has. That's what you do when you don't
have ties to one of the two branches of the War Party.
