Marv's post reminds me of Paul Baran's rejoinder to Alfred Marshall. Marshall made as his motto at the beginning of his Principles of Economics book the Latin translation of "Nature Makes no Leaps." Baran argued the opposite (which he also put in Latin) --- "Nature Makes Leaps!" ---- certainly that's true for human history --- think of the US Civil War --- or in our lifetimes --- the transformation of AFrican American opportunities in the South between 1961 and 1966 ....
