The term stagflation, as Mark notes, was descriptive; it did not bake in the 
cause. It was one manifestation of the ills of U.S. capitalism starting in the 
early 1970s. Many bourgeois economists blamed the working class, not economists 
generally. Left economists debated several different alternative explanations: 
falling rate of profit, end of Fordism, social structure of accumulation,...
