This way of blocking Trump's reelection was doomed. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment had no teeth in it because it wasn't really effective at keeping "insurrectionist" from returning to office. The Confederate general whose troops burned part of the town I grew up in wound up the governor of the state after the war. Those in charge of the Reconstruction ultimately made decisions to acquiesce to the ex-rebels, and THAT is the precedent the Supreme Court has reaffirmed. Representatives of the U.S. power structure might don a kente cloth for special occasions, but are ultimately tied to the legacy of those who sold out the Reconstruction.
The most important story coming out of the Court has to be the earlier one, about saying they were going to take their time about deciding whether or not the president has the authority to kill political opponents and not having to face prosecution. Any alcohol infused high school freshman could answer the question, but the point is the delay. The privatization of government functions naturally leads to the rise of a similar lack of accountability. Speculation about whether the ruling class or most of the ruling class wants this or that, but they are united in their desire to keep ruling . . . and in a predisposition to avoid accountability. And, again, the problem is not Trump but the conditions and civic responses that put him in the White House. Defeating him in the election won't address those.
