These are great points, Steve.  A movement and party need to have momentum to win, and the Green Party has yet to come up with someone who has even a remote chance of winning.   To be honest, I never see them do anything of public note except run Jill Stein for president, particularly in the South.  Where are they the 3 years when there’s no presidential election, and why don’t they run more local and state candidates?  Why hasn’t Stein done something like run for state representative to build her political resume?  Or does she run only for personal reasons?  To build a party, you have to have a movement that brings in tens of millions of supporters, and the Greens have accomplished nothing of the sort.  That is why a vote for them is merely a null vote that could have gone to a “lesser evil” who would save Social Security and Medicare from cuts, for example.  I just think too much is on the line to throw a vote away like that.  However, bringing in all progressive groups to create a single party would be very welcome.  I just wonder if socialists have it in them to build a coalition with others who may not share exactly the same views on certain issues.

Sometimes the "lesser evil" today prepares the ground for the greater evil tomorrow.  Bill Clinton's actions while in government had alienated a section of those who had voted for him, causing some to either abstain from voting or vote for the Republican candidate in 2000.

Similarly, Obama won by a big margin in 2008, but a lesser margin in 2012.  By 2016 the Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton, lost to Trump.  A section of those who had voted for Obama in 2008 became disillusioned with the Democrats and voted for Trump in 2016.

There is a need for an alternative to both of the major bourgeois parties.  Otherwise people will swing back and forth between the Democrats and Republicans.
