My impression from just across the border: The gulf between the two parties has become quite wide reflecting the antagonism between the social forces each party represents - the liberal bourgeoisie and diverse urban working class in the case of the Democrats versus the mainly petty bourgeois and lumpenproletarian following of the Republicans in the decaying rust belt and rural areas. That’s why many US radicals and left liberals, particularly those active in the unions and other progressive movements, find it easy to support the Democrats against the MAGA Republicans - especially now that the Democrats have put Tim Walz on their ticket. He’s the most skilled politician of the bunch largely, it is true, because of his own small town background and his ability to exploit it. He is able to take the language of class from the margins to the mainstream - what we used to call “the art of political pedagogy”.
Of course, there is no such conflict between the parties with respect to foreign policy. Such differences as they have are strategic, turning on how best to maintain the empire. The Republicans are more insistent than the Democrats that US imperialism is stretched too thin and needs to marshal its economic and military resources on China. But it is a matter of emphasis rather than a more fundamental divide as exists over social spending, democratic rights, and cultural issues in the domestic sphere. The bipartisan nature of US foreign policy is the determining factor in the minds of those who refuse to support the Democratic wing of imperialism against its Republican one which US support for the ongoing genocide in Gaza has again brought sharply into focus. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
