Gerald Horne's book 'White Supremacy Confronted' shows ZANU and the Pan-Africanist Congress were creating trouble for the ANC and S. African Communist Party as early as 1960. Robert F Williams served as an emissary for Washington and Beijing, something that could have begun as early as when he first sojourned to China in 1963. And in 1964, you have (of all people!) Deng trying to convince Hanoi to renounce all relations with the Soviet Union in the name of the Sino-Soviet Split. In 1966, the Bolivian Communists allowed their feelings regarding the Sino-Soviet split to influence their decision regarding their refusal to support Che. So there are repeated instances in the Hot Zones where we see serious impacts upon not just sectarian squabbles but the life-and-death outcomes for people struggling for liberation. I have Chinese American family that I am quite close to, my uncle by marriage had a law practice that did student visa work in Providence after Deng's opening and my mother was his paralegal. One of their sons spent two years on the mainland and explained that "Communism" is just the name for a nationalist revolution that is subordinate to a sense of patriotism that has a continuous cultural memory dating back 4,000 years. The aspiration of China today reflects aspirations they have held as a nation since before Jesus Christ was born.
