Trotsky, however, thought the restoration of capitalism was the least likely outcome. Instead, he expected that the impending world war would usher in the world revolution, including in the Soviet Union, where forces loyal to the newly-founded Fourth International would everywhere displace the Stalinists and social democrats. A related question: If the material conditions for an enduring socialist revolution were considered not to be present in Russia, even after industrialization under Stalin, why the assumption that those conditions were present in Spain in the 30's and Chile in the 70's, the two examples most frequently cited by critics of the Popular Front? What evidence is there that an attempt at socialist revolution in these equally less developed countries would not have been crushed, as they were by the Francos and Pinochets backed by imperialism? Would not such an attempt have even more surely brought French and British forces into Spain and US military intervention in Chile if necessary?
