Here is what Louis wrote well before he started rolling in his grave:

"The Marxism list is a worldwide moderated forum for activists and scholars in
the Marxist tradition who favor a non-sectarian and non-dogmatic approach. It
puts a premium on independent thought and rigorous but civil debate."

There is no single Marxist tradition. What traditions of the
socialist/communist tree should we prune? Should marxmail take a position on
the Moscow Trials? Last month, I proposed banning the Trotsky-Stalin debate as
Louis reportedly had done. That met with more disapproval than assent on the
list. Overall, the contributors to this list cannot decide basic questions of
list administration let alone which traditions are sectarian or dogmatic.

There is also the issue of the activists themselves. I work with people from
different historical traditions such as the second, third, fourth
internationalist traditions, Maoists, etc., and debating on marxmail the issues
that separate us is valuable to me in that work. Ultimately, the only way to
resolve these historical rifts among us is through common struggle guided by
democratic debate.
