John Edmundson: Thank you for reminding us of Trotsky's view of the matter, which is important for today's activists to repudiate. Its illogic should be obvious, promoting the idea that a victory by the Brazilian fascists would somehow lead to an overthrow of those same fascists. No, it would mean strengthening the fascists, enabling them to put double chains on the Brazilian proletariat.
Trotsky's mistake lay in his view that anti-imperialist activists must choose sides, to support either the British imperialists or the Brazilian fascists. No. Activists should first of all consider the interests of the working class. Getting back to today: How would a victory of the Iranian regime, which slaughtered thousands of Iranians in January, contribute to the well-being of the Iranian people? It's ridiculous to think that a victory for this regime would lead to an overthrow of the regime. John Reimann points to the need for activists to support the efforts at building a movement for secular democracy in Iran. Woman, Life, Freedom is part of this, as is the union movement. This is what's crucial for the working class, not the celebration of any unlikely military victories by the regime's forces.
