I know it's repetitious, but I always try to find historical analogies that "rhyme" with our present dilemmas --- So let me try to recall the way the anti-war movement evolved beginning with the SDS march in April 1965 ---- that inaurguarted a TEN YEAR struggle that ultimately led to the US defeats in Indochina --
If folks remember there was opposition from establishment Democrats -- most prominently Senator J. William Fulbright -- but Congress didn't gut off funds for the war till 1975!!! --- The movement was independent of the Democratic Party despite the insurgencies of the McCarhty and Kennedy campaigns in 1976 and the success of the McGovern campaign in 1972 --- Yet the fact that parts of the establishment "joined" in what ended up being a very broad and MAJORITY coalition against the war was significant. I think the establishment DEMS are "way ahead" of their counterparts from 1965 and after in terms of their efforts to curtail Trump's war --- trying to get War Powers votes, and probably having some significant opposition to the Pentagon supplemental will be a bench mark. Meanwhile, the rest of us just have to work as hard as we can to resist the war (War Tax resistance might work for some of us --- at least we should all consider FILING RETURNS and then delaying actual payment as much as possible) and remind the average citizen that the "benfits" of having an empire accrue to a narrow slice of the population --- those supplying the military and those who benefit from the empire (the oil industry, etc.) --- while the rest of us pay for it in higher taxes, higher prices and (for those in the "volunteer military" life and limb. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
