Yet as early as 1921, Lenin saw this danger! The working class was
exhausted by the civil war, and the party and the revolution now
rested solely on bureaucratic apparatuses. This is the complete
opposite of the Cuban revolution. The working class was the central
driving force of the revolution, through its support for the
guerrillas, through strikes—particularly the general strike that led
to the uprising of January 1, 1959—through the mobilizations that led
to the declaration of its socialist character in 1961, through the
mobilizations of tens of thousands of volunteers for international
solidarity, such as in Southern Africa or Nicaragua, through the
medical brigades, through the difficult times of the Special Period,
up to the current oil blockade and threat of military intervention!
How can this voluntary involvement of the Cuban masses, numbering over
a million, be considered passive and submissive, contradicting their
clearly expressed proletarian consciousness, as seen in the May Day
mobilizations of 2026 or their willingness to offer their lives in
defense of the revolution's gains? At what point was the Cuban working
class crushed by the Stalinist counter-revolution? Certainly, we have
observed in recent years a certain moral exhaustion, expressed through
mass emigration and a weakening of the will to make sacrifices. There
is no communist victory elsewhere that would improve the material
situation of Cubans. This discouragement has not yet reached the level
Lenin felt in 1921 regarding the USSR!
