Correction - Hitler and the Nazis won no election to take power. He was
*appointed* Chancellor on January 30, 1933 by President Paul von
Hindenburg. Once appointed, Hitler and the Nazi Party dismantled Germany's
democratic institutions with surprising speed:
The Reichstag Fire (February 1933): The burning of the parliament building
provided a pretext for the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended civil
liberties and allowed the government to arrest political opponents.
The Enabling Act (March 1933): Passed by the Reichstag, this law allowed
Hitler's government to enact laws without parliamentary involvement,
effectively granting him dictatorial powers.
