Tony this is a brilliant essay and I don't see anything I would really disagree with.
There are two issues however I want to note: First, while DSA could certainly require all candidates to accept skilled workers pay only and to donate the rest of their salary to the organization, and it could hold an INTERNAL recall vote, essentially saying next election that office holder will not be the DSA endorsed candidate, no recall vote for Congress exists in the US system, and while fighting for such a law would be good transitional demand, with broad public support, under current conditions, the well-funded right would organize recall votes of every elected leftist every day for their entire term in office. Second, in addressing the larger question of holding accountable to socialist voters the actions of elected socialists, from a revolutionary point of view this is one thing, but if we ask ourselves, how is it that say, Swedish Social Democrats delivered so much over decades to the workers and unions that elected them time and again, we have a different problem - granted they did not attempt to overthrow capitalism, though in the late 70s their profit sharing proposal would over time have transferred all capital to the working class - but WHY DID they do as much as much as they did to strengthen workers collectively and improve their lives? The critiques of the trio you discuss all seem convincing, yet even the New Deal's decades-long efforts to strengthen workers and small businesses against monopoly capital (see Goliath by Matt Stoller for example) seem like they shouldn't be possible. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
