Fully agree that this is the best way to map the boundary between the classes. 
The line is blurred for supervisory personnel who straddle it. They have become 
a sizeable constituency  in modern hierarchical organizations. Many 
college-educated employees both supervise and are supervised in turn. They have 
some limited control of others’  labor but not over the labour process or the 
disposition of capital. Their status as workers rather than managers has always 
been fiercely contested by employers and defended by the unions who argue that 
they don’t have independent decision-making authority and that their conditions 
more resemble those they supervise than those to whom they report. Of course, 
many don’t see themselves that way: “The working class can kiss my ass, I’ve 
got the foreman’s job at last."

Tony: "The real question for the DSA is whether an organization that has 
channeled almost all its energy into electoral work can generate that kind of 
outside pressure at all or only ever hopes to be the parliamentary wing of a 
movement it isn't building."
