Technically, an individual, near-billionaire Singham, funds People's Forum,
Code Pink, and Vishay Prashad's Tricontinental Institute – not a foreign
government. Comparison to the Communist International is incorrect.

Three years ago the U.S. made a similar attack on foreign funding of a
supposedly left-wing group. It said the Russian government funded Omali
Yeshitela's Uhuru House and African People's Socialist Party. Yeshitela is a
con man who uses a left cover. Most of the left said very little in opposition
to the U.S. charges.

In the present case, the main thing about the government's attack is its
well-worn red-baiting trick of leveling the communist charge against groups
that are democratic socialist and opponents of U.S. imperialism but not at all
communist. Defense of their right to free speech should emphasize this.

Of course, communists, too, are red-baited. The government did it when they
were a big force in trade unions. And liberals red-bait communists when there
is a struggle between them in mass organizations. Americans for Democratic
Action and the ACLU have a shameful history of this.
