A further afterthought: These qualities are as important in gaining influence as the political line carried into the wider circles - perhaps more so. I've been in organizations where ML'ists have won a following and others where Trotskyists have been more successful, and in each case it was their amiability and other personal qualities and their practical responses to the issues facing the union or political organization which were decisive. Their politics, to the extent they were known and understood, were tolerated within this context. The political line only becomes decisive when a mass party is bidding for power. This is because the many historic divisions and splits between and within social democracy and Marxism have essentially been strategic - how to take power and how to hold it. At this stage, there are no mass parties of the left and these divisions are mainly of historic interest, although you wouldn't know it by the continued vituperative infighting over program between rival tendencies which is sometimes reflected by individuals on this list.
