one of the things Dave Lindorff publicized (I think Dan Ellsberg uncovered it) was that right after the US used the A-bomb in Japan, they began to stockpile them in hopes that before the Soviets got the bomb they could in effect obliterate the entire Soviet Union with a massive bombing campaign ---FORTUNATELY for the world they had to abandon that idea when they didn't get enough of a stockpile to completely obliterate the Soviet Union before the Soviets tested their own bomb.
