A growing number of politically engaged, media-literate people are coming to
realize that the global movement that calls itself “pro-Palestine” not only
never cared about Palestinians, but is indefensible at its core. Suddenly
everyone from the New York Times to your environmentalist neighbor is
scrambling to find and amplify any magical figure, preferably Palestinian,
who’ll capture “both people’s aspirations” in some formulation that they can
claim to have supported all along. By this they’d simultaneously save face and
dodge accountability for all the famine and genocide libels, not to mention
avoid apologizing.

This is why, in two weeks’ time, both NPR and the New York Times have handed a
microphone to Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, to the utter dismay of all the terror-chic
melting witches across social media and the podcast world. People now claim
this is the pragmatic vision their “antizionist” romance was trying to
articulate all along, despite their infatuation with keffiyahs and intifadas
and red-hands pins.
