Israeli shelling killed 1,369 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip after the truce came into place until mid-September, the Gaza Health Ministry said, on top of a war toll of 73,783. ¹ The second phase of the Trump plan, with its international force, Hamas disarmament, and reconstruction, has been halted within months of signing. ² In three weeks, Israelis will vote. The race is Netanyahu vs. a remixed opposition. Bennett and Lapid on a joint list, and Gadi Eisenkot, who managed the army and sat in the war cabinet. All the coalition math that I’m aware of ignores the Arab parties, which poll at ten or eleven seats.³ I don’t think the election will impact what occurs in Gaza or the West Bank.” I begin with it, nonetheless, because the date reminds us of something the American left should debate more. What comes of October 27 will be determined by Israeli residents, Jewish and Arab, divided into parties that answer to classes and to a state. Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank get no vote. There’s nobody in Clark County, and there’s nobody in Brooklyn, so it’s Washington we have to work with. This is a discussion article in the Hal Draper and Independent Socialist League tradition: socialism from below and the third camp. The left-wing campists and the liberal two-staters ignore the significance of that tradition to Israel and Palestine for different reasons. The tradition left a hole on this question that it never filled either.
