You should try not to use a remote busy site like metalab for ping tests,
that won't test the speed of your internet connection. You should try
pinging your remote gateway, or the remote end of your PPP link. Those give
a much truer idea of your link speed, without factoring in internet
congestion.

P.S. Does anybody actually see a ping time of 30ms on a DSL?
