ive checked the faqs and maillist archives (where i found some
useful info on dsl -- thanks!), but have a question on the
network i am trying to set up. pardon my new-found ignorance.
(it took me about 48 hours of testing to realize i needed TWO
ethernet cards in my masquing machine... i guess i learn by
example and just needed to see someone say that!)
our building has a dsl line, which we have 8 ip addresses on.
currently it goes into an 8-port hub and all is well. but we
want to use ip masquerading to allow more machines on. i have
yet to get the 2nd nic for the masq machine, but once i do, i am
curious about the way to configure the (physical) network.
should each of the cables from eth0 and eth1 of the masq box
go into our 8-port hub, or should we have 2 hubs, one for dsl,
and the other for our internal masq'ed machines?
to put this question in the form of ugly ascii art:
do i want configuration A or B? (or C???)
HUB
DSL---()
()---eth0\masq
()---eth1/ box
[A] ()--------------- "fake" ip box
()------ true (DSL) ip box
HUB-0 HUB-1
DSL---() ()
()---eth0 ()----- "fake" ip box
() eth1----()
[B] ()
()---- true (DSL) ip box
ugh, that is awful. thanks for any tips!!
