True, but in his case he wanted to have several machines on the hub with
the dsl using valid ips. Clearly, he could gateway them through the linux
machine and not masq them, but it's a cleaner implementation on the masq
machine if he can use different real physical interfaces for the different
networks. If he doesn't use two hubs, he will have to have machines with
real ips on the same wire as machines with fake ones. He'd then need to
alias his interface to talk to the two networks on the same wire.

For your $.02, though, I must admit that your suggestion would work if
there is some reason that he doesn't want to buy a second hub.
