My own preference is somewhat similar, though less severe.  I don't
see any reason to tie in to gnome or kde.   They are very useful and
good sometimes, but also are bloated and inefficient.  But I've had
good experiences using robust libraries not tied into either of those.

As a side note on this topic, I looked at libvte.  My initial reaction
is that it doesn't offer anything significant over mrxvt.  Even at a
quick glance, I don't see much benefit, if any.  No worries about me
proposing that library any time soon. :)
