As far as I remember regexp selection was still only a suggestion. No patch was submitted. If one is, I'll be inclined to accept it quickly... :) As long as you're willing to select the URL yourself (say double click with appropriate selection of cutChars), and have menu support compiled in, then you should be able to control-right click and use the options in the "Open selection in" submenu. I think by default you can open the selection in firefox / w3m / mutt if I remember correctly. If you look in the menu files, this should be easy enough to customize.
