I have the vmware image downloaded. The stuff I read mentioned using
vmware player. Does anyone know if I can pop this on to my ESXi 5

My apologies, there is actually a 1.3.x VM at the previous URL.  It's
newer than the 1.3.0 release, but it is functionally the same.  Fixing
your issue still might be faster than downloading a gig of VM (which
then unpacks and installs itself).
