I always do a "mkfs -t ext3 -c -c /dev/whatever" in order to have an extended media test before the file system is created. Maybe it is because I always seem to use older equipment on my Linux systems ;) If you have an old SGI lying about, the "fx" tool included with IRIX is the best I have found for finding problems with hard drives.
