Out of our experience you need to balance between the number of disks and
the number of volumes. Too many volumes on too less disks will lead to
concurring I/O during savepoints and will slowdown the system, to less
volumes will not max out the possible I/O.

We're making the best performance with "number of disks equal number of
volumes". If you have a RAID-5 with 5 disks then create 5 volumes (even if
net only the space of 4 is available).

It's no problem to create volumes of different size, the database will
distribute new data to the less filled volumes and during times of little
I/O "rebalance" the pages so after some time you will see that the I/O is
spread again equally across all volumes.
