Even though we are just heading into winter, it's already time to
think about what you will be doing next SUMMER. Deadlines for many
programs are in January and February! Other deadlines are in March
and April, but require advance planning for success. Lay the
groundwork now for successful applications by researching the
programs for which you're eligible, and finding how to make yourself

The Berkeley Undergraduate Journal, a journal that publishes
undergraduate work in the social sciences and humanities, is looking
for front and back cover art for our spring issue. The artwork should
in some way, trivial or grand, metaphorical or literal, emphasize the
luminous academic community here at Cal. We accept all mediums, but
please keep in mind that we can only accept photos of all artwork

QB3 UNDERGRAD BIOTECH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3)
at UC Berkeley has partnered with local biotech companies to offer
paid, full-time, hands-on research and development internships to UC
Berkeley undergraduates. Must be declared major with 3.2 GPA,
classroom lab experience, and eligibility to work in US. 15-20
positions. Unfortunately, seniors (= spring or summer '06 grads) are
not eligible, although exceptions may be made for some Fall 2006
grads who are otherwise eligible.
Interns will:
-spend summer 2006 (~10 weeks) learning lab techniques
& contributing to state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research projects.

INSTITUTE FOR PURE AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS (UCLA) SUMMER PROGRAM
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) is pleased to
announce its 2006 Summer Program, Research in Industrial Projects for
Students ("RIPS"). RIPS is a nine-week, intensive residential
research
experience for math, engineering, computer science and physical/life
science undergraduate students that assigns teams of four students to
a project designed by an industrial sponsor. Besides the industrial
sponsor, each student team is also assigned a UCLA Faculty Mentor to
put students in contact with the latest mathematical techniques
relevant to their project. Students have a mid-term and final
presentation of their
project results that is attended by the industrial sponsors, faculty
mentors, and other students. Students who have a sufficient
background for the program are usually rising juniors, seniors or are

CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS
The Human Rights Center fellowship, which includes a $3,500 stipend,
provides students with an opportunity to carry out clearly defined
human rights-related fieldwork with specific governmental or
non-governmental organizations related to a student's area of study.
The goal is to encourage students to become involved in the work of
human rights organizations that can, in turn, influence a student's
area of research or academic focus. Also includes a pre-fieldwork
orientation; post-fieldwork get-together; fall conference
presentation; final paper in May. Most fellows are grad students,
but undergrads have been funded in the past. 10 participants; maximum
of two have been undergrads in previous years.

3. UCSF Research Opportunity
The John D. Gross Lab at UCSF Mission Bay campus is interested in acquiring
an ambitious and motivated undergraduate student to tackle a project
regarding mechanisms of eukaryotic mRNA decay. This project has the
potential to become a potent honors thesis, wherein the student may receive
MCB H196 credit.
Specific background requirements include completion of MCB 100B or 102,
knowledge of rudimentary molecular biology techniques, and an interest in
structure and mechanism.
